This summer has been filled with great movie blockbusters that are well worth seeing, and have wooed reviewers and moviegoers alike. Which ones have you seen, and which ones have you missed? Or, more importantly, which ones should you see, and which ones should you skip? Here are five that captured our attention the most, in no particular order.
#1. Captain America: The First Avenger
Captain America is, ironically, the last of the League of Avengers heroes to be introduced in a movie by Marvel Studios. Now that we have introduced all of the major players, the obvious and heavily anticipated next step is to release the actual League of Avengers movie, which is set for release later next year, and will include all the Marvel action superheroes.
#2. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
The first of the Transformers movies to lack the much-adored Megan Fox, Revenge of the Fallen actually does stack up to be a pretty stellar summer action movie, at least if you liked the other two Transformers movies. Loaded to the teeth with fast-paced, heart-pounding action sequences and special effects, it definitely conforms to Michael Bays (in)famous maximalist movie-making style.
#3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II
Culminating the Harry Potter series, The Deathly Hallows Part II is said to be the most action-packed and intense of the Harry Potter movies yet
#4. Cowboys & Aliens
Somewhat original, but fairly predictable, Cowboys and Aliens makes for some good summer movie watching fun. Don’t expect to be too surprised though, the movie is pretty much a longer version of the trailer. It made this list because well, how can you lose with a movie that combines two of the best classic movie characters of all time—cowboys and aliens?
#5. The Help
Yes, this isn’t an action movie. No, it won’t appeal to those of you addicted to explosions and heart pounding action. One thing is for sure, however. The Help is one of the most culturally significant movies of the summer, perhaps surpassing all the others combined. In 20 years, people won’t care which of the action movies above came out this year, but this is one movie that will likely still be watched and discussed regularly after more than a decade. It’s more than hype.
Which of the summer 2011 movie releases was your favorite—or are you looking forward to one coming out later this year?
