What’s that you say, shouldn’t that be “Julia Roberts: America’s Best Actress?!…America’s Sweetheart”?! Well, I’m sorry to say nope, for me Ms. Roberts just doesn’t cut it (as an actress, that is). Now don’t get me wrong, when Julia does her rom/com films which she’s really known for, she’s watchable (barely) but even then she’s really Julia just playing Julia. Now, yes I know she’s got the hair and Lord knows she’s got the teeth, but that looking ”shocked” routine she did in Pretty Woman when Richard Gere opened the box containing a diamond ring wasreally the last piece of genuine acting she’s done in the last two decades. And unfortunately for the audience, Julia’s managed to work that utterly surprised and delighted reaction into everything she does. What makes me really cringe, is when JR tries to take her brand of “acting” into the dramatic realm and that’s when I want to call Meryl Streep and tell her she has nothing to lose sleep over. To prove my point, let’s take look back at some of Julia’s unfortunate forays into the world of dramatic cinema:
Mary Reilly
Here in her first dip in the dramatic acting pool, Julia portrays the title character, a housemaid to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. (Also, unfortunately for Julia, she is made up to look like one of Mr Hyde’s murder victims which doesn’t make watching this movie anymore enjoyable). what I forgot to mention though, is that Julia portrays an IRISH housemaid. Unfortunately in Texas borne Julia’s hands, her Irish sounds well, uh…indescribable. Don’t believe me? Sit back and have a listen.
Michael Collins
For some reason Julia felt she did such a good job playing Irish in Mary Reilly that she decided to continue her salute to Ireland and play the IRISH love interest to Liam Neeson’s title character. While the movie was fairly well received, Julia’s participation was not. As a viewer on Amazon.com states, ”the one weak link is of course, Julia Roberts, as Harry and Mick’s love interest Kitty, with her bad Irish accent and vacant presence. She’s paralyzed by the scope of the historical drama and comes off stiff as a result, injecting the character with neither warmth nor power, and none of her signature girlish exuberance.” OUCH!
Erin Brockovich
“And the Oscar for Best Actress Breasts goes to…Julia Roberts!” Face it, for anyone who’s seen the movie you really don’t remember too much about it save for Julia showing some major cleavage. (Apparently Julia gave up on the accents and decided her only shot at ever getting an Oscar was to let her body do the talking). Well, apparently it worked and the rest as they say is history. And apparently I’m not alone in noticing this obvious fact!—check out the video.
Closer
Co-starring Jude Law, Clive Owens and Natalie Portman, Closer tells the story of how the relationships of two couples become complicated and deceitful when the man from one couple meets the woman of the other. Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it? Well, according to a viewer at IMDB.com, Julia again is in over her head as he writes, “Julia Roberts, whom everyone looks towards, is not bad in this film, but she is outshone in nearly every scene by whomever she’s acting with. “ Maybe Julia missed her breasts from Erin Brockovich.
The Mexican
Here, Jules teams up with Brad Pitt portraying his girlfirend who’s trying to get him to give up his criminal ways. Having seen this film purely for the joy of seeing Pitt, I must say that Julia had absolutely NO chemistry with Brad. Face it, if you can’t fake chemistry with Mr. Pitt, you have no business calling yourself an actress! And as a reviewer on IMDB.com states, “Julia Roberts ruined this film, at least by the second viewing. She was either yelling at Pitt all the time or gushing over a hit-man who admitted he was gay, and both routines wore thin. She thought (being gay) that was just the greatest thing and really overdid it.” Yup, that’s our Julia. Either doing the same schtick over and over or totally overacting.
So now as Julia’s latest movie, Eat Pray Loveis set to open in a few weeks, friends ask me if I plan on seeing it. I just simply smile at them and say, “no, if Julia’s in it, I’ve seen it all before.”
Wow…Only some moron could say Anything bad about Julia Roberts or Her acting..She is beautiful inside and out…and an Amazing actress that can portray any roll…You can only possibly be saying stupid stuff like that because you wish you could be even a millionth of what she is…
Julia Roberts is the highest paid actress in Hollywood, California. How can she be the worst? She should take acting classs to improve her acting career. She could be even higher paid than the highest paid actress, movie star, famous celebrity of Hollywood.
You people must have No taste in movies…and you certainly don’t know an amazing actress from a hole in the ground…she is definitely one of the Best…and I have seen MANY Movies…sure ALL Actors/Actresses star in some lousy movies…and maybe don’t do well because the Producers maybe cast the wrong person in that roll…Like for instance Nicholas Cage in that horrible movie Leaving Las Vegas… Lousy movie…but knowing Nicholas Cage as the Great Actor he is…you would think he could pull it out of the dump…but he sucked in it…and he has been in other lousy movies…you can’t fault the actor or actress for a poor decision on the Producer/Directors part…so wake up and stop talking out your backside about an actress that wouldn’t be making as many movies as she does…and the money she does…if she wasn’t amazing
I only got as far as “Irish borne” in this piece. Criticizing someone else’s work for a living, as opposed to doing work yourself, is an iffy proposition at best. This writer does not represent the best.
I could not agree more – She is an attractive woman, but I do not think she is a good actress. I am very disappointed that she was chosen for Eat, Pray, Love. I would love to watch, the movie for the scenery alone, but it will be too painful to watch Julia. No offense to Julia, but they could have found a lesser known actress who can act. I’m glad to hear that I am not alone in my thoughts about Julia – I thought I was the only one.
Totally agree…i was so sad to know she is in Eat Pray Love…i won’t watch it bacause of that….but she is good looking person to some people….but no way a good actress…

She is not good actor. Just a celebrity cashing in on a cute giggle that capture everone in Pretty woman. She constantly relies on her stupid grin in every movie. She is a box office success. Acting? Never.
Why is a woman with huge nostrils, an elasti-mouth, horse teeth and the cross-eyed look called “pretty woman?” Just because she starred in a movie with that title doesn’t mean she is one herself…
You People just wish you could be as good as her…and you all sound pathetic in bashing her…if MOST didn’t disagree with you tards on this site…she wouldn’t be making all that money…and wouldn’t be given SO MANY Rolls…so maybe you need to think about that? And grow up and stop envying her and feeling sorry for your pathetic selves?
Feel the same way about Julia as I do about Marie Osmond. If I hear that horse laugh giggle one more time……put the commercials and the movies in a time capsule and leave them there.
In every one of her movies, I see her, not her character. Her acting isn’t good enough for one to suspend belief. Even with Erin B., I watched and thought “there’s Julia Roberts being tough.” Good actors disappear into their characters. Her characters are always her, always have the same mannerisms, are always the same woman wearing different clothes. Plus, she’s too old for the part in Eat Pray Love.
Since “The Net” in 1995 (a bad movie but the starlight potential was an obvious glow), I was always convinced that the Hollywood leading lady competition challenge for many decades would come down to Sandra and Julia. Personally, I saw little in Julia and much in Sandra. However, Limoge’s slash and burn effort here against Julia is a tad below the belt. What has Julia personally done to Limoge to generate such vitriol?
Limoge,
Who are you realIly angry with? It is not Julia for shure, you are just using her to vent, some anger you hold inside. There are more productive ways to vent your resentment than trying to downgrade someone else.
sincerely,
Sergio.
Julia Robert is a star, but not an actress! Seen her in many movies always the same, on stage she was
terrible. Couldn’t even remember her lines, she was a mess!
Certainly not such a bad actress as made out to be. Richard Gere, Julia Roberts, Harrison Ford, Pierce Brosnan are above average thespians who can emote all feelings. But they look the same in every movie. You don’t get the feeling you are seeing a different Julia, Gere, Brosnan, or Ford.
De Niro, Hanks, Streep, De Caprio, are fantastic method actors/actresses, and you can look to seeing something different. Just when you are thinking they should retire, they give you something very special.
Yeah, I agree that Julia is pretty bad. She does okay when she’s basically not playing a role, such as in the Ocean’s movies. Basically she’s just being Julia. Not hard. Not interesting, but not hard.
When she has to try, it’s another story. Mary Reilly was truly awful. I remember watching it late at night on some movie network just because it was on, and the thing that really bugged me was how her accent kept disappearing. But Malkovich’s was too. So it wasn’t just her. It was all-around B-A-D.
You are wrong here. This may be my first time to this site (and probably my last), but I disagree entirely. She’s an actress, I loved Mary Reilly, Flatliners, Steel Magnolias! Julia’s problem is her celebrity supersedes her acting.

So very, very true. Well said about the overrated, overhyped, wildly undertalented Julia Roberts.
