The first sound I can remember is the sound of Rosemary’s Wine. My grandmother had an old cabinet style stereo with a record and eight track player. I remember laying on the plush white carpet, coloring in my Strawberry Short Cake coloring book as the sun would shine in and the sound of Neil Diamond would fill the air. Neil Diamond has been a part of my family for many years now and will continue on for many generations to come. Every Sunday after church my mom would do the Reggae Strut. It was her own little dance that she had made up and all four of us kids would do the Reggae Strut with her. Neil Diamond has not only written and sung wonderful music but has given me some of the best memories of my life.
As I entered my 1st Neil Diamond concert, I remember looking around at all the different people – young, old, black, white, gay and straight and thinking “wow what a crowd!” How different we all are, each from a different walk of life. Then as the hush felt over the crowd and the lights dimmed, the unity of the crowd could take your breath away. At that point I could feel the words of Neil Diamond’s music bring each and everyone of us to the same place at the same time.
Thank you to one of the Worlds Great Artist!
Neil Leslie Diamond
Neil Leslie Diamond was born on January 24th 1941 in Brooklyn to a Jewish descended from Russian and Polish immigrants. He grew up a life just as most boys would. His father, Akeeba (Kieve) Diamond was a dry goods merchant and his mother Rose Diamond loved life. Both Kieve and Rose were avid ballroom dancers and they danced regularly with many friends in each others homes. Kieve, who entertained his friends often was deep down an unabashed ham. Kieve gave his son the ambition for whatever dream he chose to pursue and taught him the value of self-reliance and to work hard and that his hard work will eventually pay off.
Neil grew up in many different homes in Brooklyn and attended Abraham Lincoln High School. Neil was driven, but not so much into his studies. He was lucky to maintain a “C” average. He did participate in the Sing, Class Nite and he was a member of Lincolns Fencing Team. He was an above average fencer and helped the Lincoln High Team make the news.
Neil wrote his 1st song for his girlfriend, “Hear Them Bells”. He did not record it at the time, but he did many years later. At age 18 he composed Blue Destiny, A Million Miles Away, in 1959 he wrote A Good Kind of Lonely and then in 1966 he did the Cherry Cherry.
Greater success as a writer followed with, I’m a Believer, Kentucky Woman, Thank the Lord for The Night Time Sweet Caroline and Brother Love’s Traveling Show. He debuted on screen in “The Jazz Singer ” in 1980. In 2001 Neil played him self in “Saving Silverman.”
Another monster hit for Neil was in 1986 when he followed his smash 1972 live double album Hot August Night with Hot August Night II.
Neil did not stop there, he went on writing and performing and blessing us with his gift. Despite his nickname the Jewish Elvis, Neil is a man who truly loves Christmas. In 1992 The Christmas Album was released. The album features the prerequisite Christmas songs like, “Jingle Bell Rock, White Christmas and Joy to The World.” In 1994 Neil released The Christmas Album Vol 2. Neil addressed 15 seasonal songs that hadn’t made it onto the 1st album. The man forever in blue jeans took yet another crack at a Christmas album and on Oct 13 2009 Neil released A Cherry Cherry Christmas.
On September 28, 2010, Neil Diamond was nominated for the rock and roll hall of fame. Already a member of the Song Writing Hall of Fame . Neil has been making success for over five decades and has sold over 92 million records worldwide, over 35 Top 40 singles and 18 platinum albums.
